Asphalt Driveway Paving: Advantages Over Concrete

For most home owners, the choices are concrete or asphalt driveway paving in MA. If you have the budget, you can also opt for classy cobblestones, pavers, or bricks; but for those with a tight budget, concrete and asphalt do the trick nicely. There are some advantages that asphalt paving has over concrete however, so if you are looking to put in a new driveway, take these facts into consideration.

Asphalt Is More Flexible

One of the biggest problems with concrete is that it is not flexible and suffers damage as a result of the freeze/thaw cycle of cold climates. Asphalt, on the other hand, can expand and contract as outside temps get hotter or cooler, minimizing the chance for cracks and the need for repairs. In addition, asphalt can be salted in winter, but salting a concrete driveway is highly corrosive and damaging to its surface.
Asphalt’s flexibility allows the driveway to move with the underlying soil, something that concrete cannot do at all.

Asphalt Is Great for Sloping Driveways

Sloping driveways present unique challenges when it comes to paving. When you pave a sloping driveway with concrete, you run the risk of having the concrete top separate from the foundation, which will cause cracks. When water gets into the cracks and freezes, it expands, widening the cracks and reducing the concrete to rubble. Asphalt doesn’t have this issue because the binding is able to move and flex over surfaces.

Asphalt Costs Less

Asphalt has an initial lower cost than concrete, which makes it attractive to many home buyers. While you can’t color or stamp asphalt like you can concrete (meaning that your driveway will never be able to pretend it’s made of more expensive pavers), this lower cost extends to repairs, as well. You can repair cracks on your own using emulsified liquids or solid cold patches, and the repairs are not nearly as visible as concrete repairs. When you decide that you need a new surface on your driveway, a company that specializes in driveway paving in MA will be able to complete the resurfacing easily and quickly without the need to remove the underlying foundation.
